Capercaillie

The capercaillie (Latin Tetrao urogallus) is a large bird from the pheasant family, the order of the chicken. The bird owes the name "capercaillie" to the well-known peculiarity of the male present during the mating season to lose sensitivity and vigilance, which is often used by hunters.

The capercaillie is the largest bird of the grouse tribe. It differs from other representatives of the tribe by a strongly rounded tail and elongated feathers on the throat. It lives in coniferous, mixed and deciduous forests of Eurasia.

The size of males reaches 110 cm or more, the wingspan is 1.4 m, and the weight is 4.1-6.5 kg. The female is noticeably smaller — by 1⁄ 3, weighs an average of 2 kg. Sexual dimorphism is not limited to size, but also manifests itself in coloration. The head and neck of the male are blackish, the back of the neck is ash-gray with black spots, the front is black with gray. The back is blackish with brown and gray spots. The goiter is black with a green metallic luster, the chest is a greenish-steel color, the underside is covered with black and white spots. The wings are brown. The tail is black with white spots. The naked skin around the eye is bright red, the beak is white and pink. The female is smaller and is very variegated with a mixture of rusty-yellow, rusty-red, black-brown and white (in the form of transverse dark and rusty-ochre stripes). The throat, the fold of the wing and the upper part of the chest are rusty red. This color is needed by the female for camouflage during nesting.

Capercaillie is kept mainly in solid high-stemmed coniferous, as well as in mixed forests, rarely in deciduous. He loves moss swamps in the forest, rich in berries. Leads a generally sedentary lifestyle, but sometimes undertakes migrations from the mountains to the valleys and back; sometimes makes seasonal migrations. It flies hard, with a lot of noise, often flapping its wings, and does not make large flights. He usually spends the day on the ground, spends the night in trees. He is very careful, has excellent hearing and vision, and therefore hunting him is very difficult.
